Driving Dartford

Dartford in Kent, England, lies some 16 miles south east of London.

The River Darent traverses the town centre. In medieval times Dartford came to prominence as a market town, being located along the London to Dover route. Now Dartford is home to thousands of commuters who work in London but live in Kent. Surprisingly, there have been settlements in this area for some 25,000 years. Swanscombe Man, a prehistoric hunter-gather, is just one of many examples of archaeological finds in the Dartford area.
Romans were responsible for designing and ordering the construction of the Dover to London road, later known as Watling Street.

Once Roman villas graced the river banks and traces of the many Roman settlements can still be seen at Noviomagus, Crayford, close by. Hiring a car is a good idea, since Kent is England’s largest county with many attractions. Dartford was once an important stop-over for pilgrims on the route to Canterbury. Today Dartford Manor at Sutton-at-Hone, a National Trust property, is evidence of the religious importance of the area.
In recent times Dartford became the focus of attention as the place where Mick Jagger, Rolling Stones singer and front man, used to live.

The Mick Jagger Centre in Shepherds Lane offers facilities for budding artists. A local history museum can be found in Market Street. The Orchard Theatre hosts shows and major productions prior to their move to the West End.
At the western bank of the Darent visitors will find the Parish Church, Holy Trinity, first built in the 9th century but later replaced in the days of the Normans. Further afield is Dartford Heath, some 130 acres of heathland, a haven for wildlife and walkers alike. Darenth Country Park invites cyclists with specially designed paths and routes through the park.
