Car Hire Dresden

Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony. For centuries they furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendour. In fact, the city became known as the “Jewel Box”, because of the splendour of it’s baroque and rococo city centre.
Dresden lies on both banks of the river Elbe in the Dresden Basin. With its pleasing location and a mild climate combined with the Baroque-style architecture and numerous world-renowned museums and art collections, it has often been called “Elbflorenz” or the “Florence of the Elbe”. The temperature varies form minus 2 Celsius (28 Fahrenheit) in January to highs of 23 Celsius (72 Fahrenheit) in August.
Although 80% of Dresden’s city centre was ruined in the 2nd world war all of the notable landmarks have been returned to their previous grandeur. Some must see sites are; The church of Our Lady (In World War II, when air-raids wiped out the city center, the grand church collapsed into a 42 feet high pile of rubble. The ruins were left untouched until 1994, when the painstaking reconstruction of the church began. Almost completely financed by private donations from around the world).
Bruhles terrace, set between the river Elbe and the Old Town.

Also nicknamed “The Balcony of Europe”, the terraced promenade was part of Dresden’s original rampart, until it became the garden of the Royal Palace
Zwinger palace, one of the finest examples of late Baroque architecture in Germany
Semper opera – Set at the Theater Square in the heart of Dresden, the portal of the Opera depicts famous artists such as Goethe, Shakespeare, and Molière.
And The Green vault, home to one of the finest royal treasures collections in Europe.
When in Dresden don’t forget to go for a meal at Cosepalais-Restaurant und Grand cafe, one of the towns top rated restaurants. This is a proper ‘Old School’ place specialising in good German food at reasonable prices. The restaurant occupies four beautiful rooms in a restored palace, and a large outdoor patio. In fact, the interiors alone are worth a visit just to take a look.
I would also hire a car and take a drive following the river to the town of Meissen which is famous for its porcelain. And while you are about it, take a slow drive through the scenery of Saxony Switzerland – truly beautiful. On your way back, stop in at Pillnitz Castle and Park, one of Dresden’s top attractions that lies about eleven miles outside the town.
Dresden – a city of many faces.
